Punjab Floods Thousands Displaced After Sutlej Water Release
Floods Sweep Through Punjab, Thousands Displaced as India Releases Water into Sutlej
Punjab is grappling with severe flooding as multiple settlements, including Kacha Mianwali, Kacha Mandri, Miran Pur, Kacha Chohan, and Dera Dildar, remain submerged. The deluge has destroyed thousands of acres of cotton, moong, and other crops, leaving residents struggling to cope with the devastation.
Houses and schools in the affected areas are underwater, while rescue teams are working tirelessly to move residents to safer locations. Officials from Punjab Police and the district administration have urged people to evacuate immediately from flood-prone areas. Relief camps and temporary shelters have been established to accommodate displaced families.
Amid the worsening situation, many residents are using private boats to reach higher ground.
The flooding comes as India released additional water into the Sutlej River, raising fears of another surge downstream. A high flood alert has been issued near Harike and Ferozepur barrages, with the Indian High Commission notifying Islamabad about the situation. Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources has also informed provincial authorities and relevant departments to prepare for the rising waters.
Currently, the floodwaters that devastated central Punjab are moving toward southern Punjab and onward to Sindh, heading for the Guddu Barrage via the Punjnad Headworks. According to Sindh’s Information Department, the inflow and outflow at Trimmu Barrage stand at 279,908 cusecs. At Punjnad Headworks, inflow and outflow have reached 475,129 cusecs.
In Sindh, the inflow at Guddu Barrage has surged to 502,844 cusecs, with an outflow of 492,443 cusecs. The Indus River at Sukkur Barrage is seeing 400,405 cusecs inflow and 382,355 cusecs outflow, while downstream at Kotri Barrage, the figures are 253,145 cusecs and 251,745 cusecs, respectively.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as rescue and relief efforts intensify across the affected regions.
