Arshad Set for Javelin Showdown at World Championships
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem is all set to compete in the qualification round of the javelin throw at the World Championships, where he has been placed in Group A. The finals are scheduled for September 18, with the event kicking off at 4:45 pm Pakistan Standard Time.
Arshad, who underwent calf surgery in July and missed the Diamond League competitions, has now regained full fitness and is cleared to return to the field. According to the Pakistan Athletics Federation, he has displayed strong performances in training, and his coaches are confident he can deliver top results on the global stage.
The qualification round will see Arshad up against defending champion Neeraj Chopra of India and Germany’s seasoned thrower Julian Weber. Chopra, 27, will be aiming to become only the third male javelin thrower in history to defend a World Championships gold, after his victory in Budapest 2023.
This competition marks the first meeting between Arshad and Chopra since the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Arshad finished second. The matchup gives him a chance to avenge that result and make his mark once again.
The top eight throwers from the qualification round will advance to Thursday’s final. Ahead of the event, Arshad appealed to his fans for support, saying, “Please pray for me so I can perform well and reach the final.”
Arshad has already made history for Pakistan. In 2022, he won gold at the Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Pakistani to throw the javelin near the 90-meter mark. He followed that with a stunning 92.97-meter throw at the 2024 Paris Olympics to clinch gold, cementing his place among the world’s javelin elite.
