Immigration Judge Orders Deportation of Khalil to Algeria or Syria
In a ruling dated September 12, Immigration Judge Jamee Comans ordered that Khalil, a legal permanent resident of the United States, be deported to Algeria—or to Syria.
The judge’s order criticized Khalil’s green card application, stating that the omission of certain information “was not an oversight by an uninformed, uneducated applicant…rather, this Court finds that Respondent willfully misrepresented material fact(s).”
Khalil, speaking to the American Civil Liberties Union, called the ruling “no surprise” and framed it as retaliation for his activism. “It is no surprise that the Trump administration continues to retaliate against me for my exercise of free speech,” he said. “Their latest attempt, through a kangaroo immigration court, exposes their true colors once again.”
Khalil, who is married to a U.S. citizen and has a U.S.-born son, was detained by immigration authorities for three months beginning in March and faced the threat of deportation. A former Columbia University student, he was one of the most visible leaders of nationwide pro-Palestinian campus protests.
Released from custody in June, Khalil continues to face ongoing deportation threats from federal authorities.
