Mourinho Returns to Benfica After Signing Two-Year Deal
Lisbon — José Mourinho, the former Real Madrid manager, has returned to Portuguese football, signing a two-year contract with Benfica. He arrived in Lisbon on Wednesday and is set to take over from Bruno Lage, who was dismissed following Tuesday’s surprising 3-2 Champions League home defeat to Qarabag.
Mourinho, who parted ways with Fenerbahce last month, revealed that Benfica approached him about the role. “Benfica officially asked me if I was interested… What coach says no to Benfica? Not me,” he told reporters after landing in the capital. “When I was presented with the opportunity to coach Benfica, I didn’t hesitate to say that I’m interested, that I’d like to.”
Mourinho began his head coaching career at Benfica in 2000 before moving to Porto in 2002, where he won six trophies, including the Champions League in 2003-04. Since then, he has managed some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, and Fenerbahce.
His exit from Fenerbahce came after the Turkish side was knocked out of the Champions League play-offs by none other than Benfica.
