Northern Europe Drone Threats Rise

Rising Drone Sightings Spark Security Concerns in Northern Europe

In recent days, airports across Denmark and Norway have been forced to close temporarily after drones were spotted flying in restricted airspace. The latest sighting occurred late Friday over Denmark’s largest military base, raising alarm among authorities.

Germany, a key supporter of Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow, has also reported a surge in suspicious drone activity. The most recent incident happened late Friday in a northern German state bordering Denmark. While suspicions have pointed toward Russia, no concrete evidence has been made public.

Earlier this week, Berlin announced plans to strengthen its drone defense systems in response to the growing perceived threat. According to the German tabloid Bild, one proposal under consideration would allow the armed forces to shoot down drones under specific conditions. Military intervention would be permitted if a drone poses a serious risk to human life or critical infrastructure and if other measures are deemed insufficient. In such cases, decision-making authority would shift from the police to the defense ministry.

The Interior Ministry has not confirmed these plans. However, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told Rheinische Post that he intends to update air security laws to allow the military to support the police, particularly in countering drone threats. “We are not only experiencing a turning point in military security, but also in civil defense and civil protection as a whole,” he said.

Late Friday, drones were reported over Schleswig-Holstein, the German state bordering Denmark, according to state Interior Minister Sabine Suetterlin-Waack. Authorities have launched investigations but have not disclosed the number of drones involved or the exact locations of the sightings.
