Pakistan Pushes for Clean Energy, Strengthens Power Distribution Sector

Islamabad – In a recent briefing, Federal Minister Awais Leghari announced significant reforms in Pakistan’s energy sector, aimed at improving governance, accountability, and environmental sustainability.

Speaking at a high-level meeting, Leghari said independent boards are being introduced in distribution companies to ensure professional management and stronger oversight. “We have cut losses in the energy distribution sector by one-third in just one year,” he noted, adding that the government is considering privatization of distribution companies to further enhance performance.

Leghari also met with a delegation from the Asian Development Bank, highlighting Pakistan’s focus on clean energy initiatives. He pointed out the recent introduction of a new tariff for electric vehicles and emphasized the country’s push for international cooperation to upgrade grid and metering systems.

Underlining Pakistan’s commitment to the environment, the minister revealed that around 2,800 MW of fossil fuel-based power plants have been shut down ahead of schedule. The country now aims to access green financing and carbon credits to support its sustainable energy goals.
