Australia Beat New Zealand by 90 Runs

Australia Outclass New Zealand Despite Sophie Devine’s Fighting Century

Indore – Australia powered past New Zealand with a 90-run victory after Ashleigh Gardner’s brilliant century lit up their clash on Wednesday.

Set a daunting target of 327, New Zealand were bowled out for 237 in 43.2 overs. Captain Sophie Devine fought valiantly with a superb 111-run knock, but her effort wasn’t enough to save the Kiwis. Amelia Kerr added 33, while the rest of the batting order struggled against Australia’s disciplined attack.

For Australia, Gardner was the star performer, smashing 115 off just 83 balls. She was well supported by Phoebe Litchfield (45) and Kim Garth (38), helping Australia post a commanding total. Gardner’s all-round display earned her the Player of the Match award.

On the bowling side, Litchfield and Sophie Molineux picked up three wickets each, tightening the screws on New Zealand. For the Kiwis, Jess Kerr and Mary took three wickets apiece but couldn’t prevent Australia from crossing the 300 mark.

Gardner’s match-winning performance is a continuation of her stellar form. Earlier in 2023, she guided Australia into the Women’s T20 World Cup final with both bat and ball, sealing a close win against India. Beth Mooney’s steady half-century in that game was also pivotal, adding to Australia’s reputation as the team to beat in women’s cricket.
