Mahmood Achakzai Refuses PTI Offer Amid Opposition Leader Dispute
Mahmood Achakzai Skips PTI Proposal Amid Opposition Leader Controversy
Sources indicate that Mahmood Achakzai, chief of PkMAP, expressed frustration with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders over the continued nomination of Omar Ayub as Opposition Leader, pending the court’s stay order.
According to insiders, PTI leaders had suggested that Achakzai hold a press conference to thank party founder Imran Khan and announce that he would not accept the Opposition Leader post until legal hurdles were resolved. Achakzai reportedly declined the proposal, telling party officials, “You people don’t even want me to become the Opposition Leader,” before leaving for Balochistan.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) dismissed reports of a rift between Achakzai and PTI. The spokesperson emphasized that Achakzai is in Quetta for routine political work and denied any disagreement or dissatisfaction with PTI.
The tension comes after PTI suspended nominations for the Leader of the Opposition in both the National Assembly and the Senate. The party’s political committee had announced a halt to the nominations of Mahmood Achakzai and Azam Swati, stating that “no new nominations will be made until the appeals of Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz are decided.”
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja reiterated the party’s support for the current opposition leaders and added, “PTI’s founder has proposed new names as opposition leaders. We hope the court will decide the matter in our favour.”
Reports suggest that internal divisions have emerged within PTI over Imran Khan’s decision to nominate Achakzai as National Assembly Opposition Leader. Several party members reportedly raised objections, arguing that other capable members could take on the role, a discussion that was reflected in PTI’s political and parliamentary committees.
