Airport Chaos After Cyberattack
Cyberattack on Collins Aerospace Disrupts Major European Airports
A cyberattack on Friday targeting Collins Aerospace, a check-in and boarding systems provider owned by RTX (RTX.N), caused widespread disruption across several major European airports, including London’s Heathrow, Berlin Brandenburg, and Brussels Airport.
The attack crippled the company’s MUSE software, used by multiple airlines, forcing airports to rely on manual operations. Passengers over the weekend faced long queues, delays, and cancellations, with Brussels experiencing the most severe impact.
At Brussels Airport, 25 flights were cancelled on Saturday and 50 of Sunday’s 257 departures were scrapped to prevent chaos at terminals. Officials confirmed that full system functionality had not been restored as Collins Aerospace had yet to provide a secure, updated software version. More cancellations were expected on Monday.
Heathrow and Berlin airports reported that conditions improved by Sunday, though some delays and extended wait times at check-in, boarding, and baggage handling persisted. Berlin officials said manual workarounds were helping operations run closer to normal.
RTX, which did not respond immediately on Sunday, had earlier stated that it was working to resolve the issue quickly and emphasized that manual check-in procedures were mitigating some of the disruption.
While some travelers reported minimal issues, others without online check-in or baggage pre-processing faced significant delays. One passenger departing Brussels described his experience as “business as usual,” but noted that “those poor souls” with checked bags endured longer waits.
