Akon’s Wife Files for Divorce Ahead of 29th Anniversary
In a surprising turn, Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thiam, has reportedly filed for divorce from the ‘Lonely’ singer just days before the couple’s 29th wedding anniversary, citing irreconcilable differences.
According to court documents obtained by foreign media, Thiam is seeking spousal support from Akon and joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey. She is also requesting sole physical custody of their only child and has asked the court not to award any spousal support to Akon.
Neither Akon nor Thiam’s representatives have commented on the divorce filing so far.
Akon, who has previously spoken openly about his belief in polygamy, is a father of nine children—seven boys and two girls. In a 2022 interview, he said, “[Polygamy is] part of our culture. Absolutely. For me, it looks normal, because it’s a culture for us. We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world.” He also criticized Western societal rules, saying they “created all these rules without putting nature into account.”
Earlier reports suggested that Akon has four wives, with Thiam being one of them, while the others reportedly reside in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Africa.
