Al Jazeera Journalist Anas Al Sharif Killed in Gaza Airstrike, Leaves Emotional Farewell Message

GAZA CITY – Anas Al Sharif, a 28-year-old Al Jazeera journalist, was among five people killed in an Israeli airstrike near Shifa Hospital in eastern Gaza City, Gaza officials and Al Jazeera confirmed.

Al Sharif had been reporting from Gaza throughout the war, documenting the hardships and resilience of its people, often while under direct threat. His life came to a tragic end when an airstrike struck a tent where he and colleagues were working.

Fully aware of the risks he faced, Al Sharif had written a final message—his “will”—to be shared if he was killed. Hours after the strike, it was posted on his X account.

In the heartfelt message, he wrote:

“If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice… Allah knows I gave every effort and all my strength to be a support and a voice for my people, ever since I opened my eyes to life in the alleys and streets of the Jabalia refugee camp.”

He expressed his longing to one day return to his family’s original home in occupied Asqalan, but said Allah’s will had decided otherwise. Reflecting on his work, he vowed that he had always told the truth “without distortion or falsification,” determined to bear witness against those who remained silent in the face of suffering.

Al Sharif’s message entrusted the world with the Palestinian cause, urging people not to be silenced or restrained by borders, and to work for the liberation of Palestine until “the sun of dignity and freedom rises over our stolen homeland.”

He also spoke tenderly of his family, entrusting the care of his young daughter Sham and son Salah to others. He expressed deep love for his mother, wife, and relatives, noting how the war had kept him apart from them for long periods.

His final words reflected steadfast faith:

“If I die, I die steadfast upon my principles… Do not forget Gaza. And do not forget me in your sincere prayers for forgiveness and acceptance.”

The post was shared online with the note: “This is what our beloved Anas requested to be published upon his martyrdom.”
