Collins’ Late Fumble Recovery Secures 49ers’ Victory Over Rams in Overtime Thriller
SAN FRANCISCO – Alfred Collins made a game-changing play with just over a minute left in regulation, forcing and recovering a fumble at the San Francisco 1-yard line to help the 49ers (4-1) hold off the Los Angeles Rams (3-2) in a dramatic overtime finish.
49ers quarterback Mac Jones, filling in for Brock Purdy, who missed his third game in four weeks due to turf toe, completed 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns. Wideout Kendrick Bourne had a career night with 142 yards on 10 catches, while Christian McCaffrey contributed 139 scrimmage yards (57 rushing, 82 receiving) and a touchdown. Tight end Jake Tonges also found the end zone with a scoring catch.
The Rams were led by Matthew Stafford, who threw for a season-high 389 yards and three touchdowns on 30-of-47 passing. Kyren Williams added two touchdowns and 131 scrimmage yards (65 rushing, 66 receiving) but was involved in two costly plays that ultimately helped the 49ers seal the win. Puka Nacua caught 10 passes for 85 yards and a score.
The game went into overtime after Williams seemed poised to score a go-ahead 2-yard touchdown late in regulation, only for Collins to strip the ball away. The Rams got the ball back and tied it with a 48-yard field goal from Joshua Karty with just two seconds remaining.
In overtime, the 49ers opened with a field goal, and the Rams’ attempt to respond fell short. On fourth-and-1 at the San Francisco 11, Williams was stopped short by multiple 49ers, with Marques Sigle delivering the decisive hit, ending the game with 3:36 left. Robbie Gould’s kicking was key for San Francisco, including a tiebreaking 59-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.
The Rams had rallied from a 13-point deficit midway through the third quarter. Stafford connected with Nacua for a 1-yard touchdown and later hit Williams for an 8-yard score. A blocked extra point by San Francisco’s Jordan Elliott kept the game tied.
San Francisco had dominated early, with Jones going 5-for-5 for 77 yards on the opening drive, finishing with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Tonges. A 17-play, 91-yard drive later extended the lead to 14-0 on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Jones to McCaffrey. The Rams finally got on the board late in the first half when Stafford found Williams for a 14-yard touchdown with just over two minutes remaining.
