Typhoon Co-May Hits China, Thousands Evacuated
Shanghai, July 30:
A strong typhoon named Co-May hit eastern China on Wednesday morning. It first made landfall in Zhejiang Province around 4:30 am, and it is expected to hit Shanghai later in the evening.
Due to heavy rain, the Shanghai Central Weather Office raised the rain alert from yellow to orange, which is the second-highest warning level.
So far, over 280,000 people have been safely moved to safer places, according to China’s national TV. This helped ensure that everyone who needed to leave was safely evacuated.
Videos from coastal areas showed big waves crashing over walkways, and in Ningbo city, people were seen walking in ankle-deep water.
In a separate event, China also issued a tsunami warning after a powerful 8.8 earthquake occurred near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. But that tsunami warning was later cancelled.
