Alcaraz Clinches Sixth Grand Slam as Sinner Reflects on Setback
Carlos Alcaraz celebrated a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win to claim his sixth Grand Slam singles title, leaving Jannik Sinner reflecting on a loss that also means he will be dethroned as world number one.
Despite both players ending 2025 with two Grand Slam titles each, Sinner’s record against Alcaraz has become a worrying pattern. The 24-year-old Italian has now lost seven of their last eight encounters, with his only victory this year coming in the Wimbledon final back in July.
After Sunday’s defeat, Sinner admitted that he needs to adopt a riskier, less predictable game if he hopes to keep up with the Spaniard.
“I was very predictable today,” Sinner said. “He changed up the game, and I didn’t adapt. Now it’s on me to decide if I want to make changes. We’ll definitely work on that. I want to be more prepared for the next match against him.”
Sinner noted that comfort in previous matches can be misleading. “During this tournament, I didn’t serve-and-volley once or use many drop shots. But when you face Carlos, you have to step out of your comfort zone.”
Willing to Sacrifice for Growth
The Italian is ready to sacrifice short-term results to develop a more complete game. “I might even lose some matches while trying these changes,” he said. “But I need to be more unpredictable to become a better tennis player.”
Sinner acknowledged Alcaraz’s own improvements since Wimbledon, praising his versatile game and strong serve.
“He has improved. Today he was cleaner, doing everything slightly better — especially serving,” Sinner said.
The match statistics backed up his observations. Alcaraz served 10 aces with no double-faults and landed 61% of his first serves. Sinner, by contrast, managed just two aces, double-faulted four times, and hit only 48% of his first serves.
Looking ahead, Sinner plans to make adjustments to his service game. “I’m going to change a couple of things on the serve — small tweaks, but they can make a big difference. Then we’ll see how it goes,” he said.
