Aspinall Eyes Title Defense as Dana White Casts Doubt on Jon Jones’ UFC Future
LONDON – UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall is preparing for his first undisputed title defense amid growing uncertainty over Jon Jones’ return and a potential shake-up in the division.
After months of speculation, UFC President Dana White recently expressed that he no longer trusts Jon Jones to be ready for the much-anticipated mega event at the White House next year. This announcement casts serious doubt over a long-rumored bout between Jones and Aspinall.
The situation has been fluid in recent weeks. Dana White initially declared Jon Jones retired, prompting the UFC to officially recognize Tom Aspinall as the undisputed heavyweight champion. However, Jones later re-entered the UFC’s drug testing pool, signaling his intent to make a comeback.
Despite this, Dana White has since confirmed following UFC 318 that Jones is unlikely to feature on the marquee event card due to ongoing trust issues.
Tom Aspinall, unwilling to wait any longer, has now confirmed that his first title defense is in the works. Though his opponent has not yet been announced, top contenders Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov are reportedly being considered, as the current heavyweight lineup remains thin.
Meanwhile, former UFC champion Francis Ngannou has re-entered discussions. Following Jones’ apparent retirement, Ngannou contacted Dana White to explore a potential return to the UFC. Although Ngannou has not fought in MMA since joining the PFL in 2023, his comeback remains a possibility. White hasn’t ruled it out, despite their history of a rocky working relationship.
Aspinall has welcomed the idea of facing Ngannou and recently said he’s open to fighting anyone willing to challenge him. Talks of a mixed-rules bout between Ngannou and top kickboxer Rico Verhoeven—Aspinall’s teammate—have reportedly fizzled out.
With Jon Jones sidelined and Francis Ngannou’s status still uncertain, the UFC heavyweight division remains in flux. For now, all eyes are on who will step up to challenge Tom Aspinall as he prepares to defend his title on the global stage.
