Astros’ Yordan Alvarez Injures Leg in First Inning, Pena and Alvarez Score on Correa’s Hit
Houston – The Astros got off to an electrifying start Monday, but the excitement came with a painful twist. With Jeremy Peña on second and Yordan Alvarez on first and no outs in the bottom of the first, Carlos Correa sent a soft liner between the pitcher and home plate. Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter fielded it cleanly but slipped while throwing, sending the ball over first baseman Jake Burger’s head.
Peña scored easily, and Alvarez rounded third, ignoring the stop sign, to score as well. In a dramatic slide, Alvarez stepped over catcher Jonah Heim’s leg to reach home, but lost his balance and tumbled forward. He hopped in obvious pain toward the dugout until teammate Christian Walker was able to halt his momentum.
Alvarez put little weight on his left leg as he hobbled down the dugout steps, forcing the Astros to replace him at the top of the second inning with rookie outfielder Zach Cole.
The timing of the injury couldn’t be worse for Houston (81-69), who entered Monday just one game behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West race.
Alvarez was making his 48th appearance of the season, having missed 100 games after a hand injury on May 2. Since his return on August 26, the left-handed slugger had been red-hot, hitting .369 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 78 plate appearances.
For the season, Alvarez boasts a .273/.364/.430 line with six home runs and 27 RBIs. His absence could be a major blow as the Astros push for the division crown.
