Balochistan Mobile Data Services Restored After Three-Week Suspension

QUETTA — Mobile data services in Balochistan have been restored after being suspended on August 6 due to security concerns. The move comes following an order from the Balochistan High Court, which directed the government to resume services in response to a constitutional petition.

Authorities had blocked cell phone data across the southwestern province for three weeks to prevent separatist insurgents from coordinating attacks. Officials say the suspension was aimed at curbing a recent surge in violence.

Separatist militants in the mineral-rich province, who have been demanding a larger share of local resource profits, have intensified attacks in recent months, particularly targeting Pakistan’s military. In response, the military has carried out intelligence-based operations against the militants.

Earlier, the government had announced that the suspension would continue until the end of the month due to ongoing law and order challenges in Balochistan, which is also home to key Chinese Belt and Road projects.

“The service was suspended because militants were using it for coordination and sharing information,” said Shahid Rind, spokesperson for the provincial government.
