Bruno Fernandes’ Last-Minute Penalty Secures United Win Over Burnley

Manchester – Manchester United needed a dramatic late penalty from Bruno Fernandes to edge promoted Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday, after twice surrendering the lead.

The victory marked United’s first Premier League win in three games, coming just days after a humiliating League Cup exit at the hands of fourth-tier Grimsby.

Following that shocking cup defeat, manager Amorim admitted he sometimes questions his future at United and struggles with frustration toward his players.

Despite lingering speculation over Amorim’s future, United defender Matthijs de Ligt defended his manager after the Burnley win.

“I think the only thing that mattered today was the win,” De Ligt said. “We know we could have played better, but getting the three points was the most important thing.”

Asked whether he wanted Amorim to stay, De Ligt replied: “Yes, of course. As players, we are responsible for our results. People always talk about the manager, but we also looked at each other after Grimsby and agreed that our performance wasn’t acceptable.

“It wouldn’t be fair to blame just the manager. We know it’s mostly us, and we accept that. So yes, we stand behind him, he stands behind us, and that’s how we move forward. Today’s win makes that even clearer.”

De Ligt was sporting a black eye from the midweek clash with Grimsby, which saw United claw back from two goals down only to lose in a penalty shootout. He admitted the team hasn’t dwelled on the defeat because it was too painful.

“There hasn’t been much discussion because everyone knows how it felt,” he said. “Losing a game like that is tough, and we were really disappointed in ourselves. Winning today was the only thing that could help ease the sting of Wednesday’s loss.”

United struggled to look like a cohesive unit against Burnley, with sloppy defending and poor goalkeeping allowing the visitors to twice level the score. Yet Fernandes’ late penalty heroics kept criticism at bay as the team heads into the international break.

Amorim’s job will face another stern test when United resume Premier League action against rivals Manchester City on September 14, before hosting in-form Chelsea six days later.
