Canada Leads Measles Cases in the Americas Amid 2025 Outbreak
Canada is now reporting about half of all confirmed measles cases in the Americas this year, according to data released by the World Health Organization (WHO) this month.
Although Canada officially eliminated measles in 1998, the virus has returned, hitting unvaccinated communities particularly hard, including certain Mennonite Christian groups.
Ontario, the country’s most populous province with roughly 16 million residents, has recorded 2,366 cases, bringing Canada’s national total to 4,638, according to the latest federal data. Alberta has been the hardest-hit area per capita, reporting 1,790 cases, based on figures released weekly by the provincial government.
By comparison, the United States, facing its worst measles outbreak in three decades, has confirmed 1,375 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week.
WHO’s Pan American Health Organization noted that 71 percent of confirmed cases occurred in unvaccinated individuals, with another 18 percent among people whose vaccination status is unknown. Experts have pointed to vaccine misinformation as a key factor driving the outbreak.
Much of the Canadian epidemic has occurred within Anabaptist Christian communities, particularly Mennonites, where vaccine hesitancy has deep roots. The outbreak’s start has been linked to a Mennonite wedding in New Brunswick.
Outside Ontario and Alberta, cases remain limited. British Columbia is the third-most affected province, reporting 190 cases.
Canada has recorded one suspected measles-related death during this outbreak: a newborn whose mother was unvaccinated. Officials noted the baby was born pre-term and had other health conditions.
