Canada to Recognize Palestinian State at UN in 2025
Ottawa – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Canada will recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.
Carney said the decision is necessary to keep alive the hope of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. He warned that this hope is “disappearing before our eyes.”
With this move, Canada joins France and the United Kingdom, which also plan to recognize Palestine this September.
Carney said the suffering of people in Gaza is getting worse and that the world must act together now to support peace. “There is no time to wait,” he said.
Conditions for Recognition
Carney made it clear that Canada’s decision depends on reforms by the Palestinian Authority (PA), which is led by President Mahmoud Abbas. The PA controls parts of the West Bank.
He said the PA must hold general elections in 2026 and that the group Hamas cannot take part. He also said the future Palestinian state must be demilitarized.
Mixed Reactions
Israel strongly criticized Canada’s decision. The Israeli embassy in Ottawa said it rewards “the barbarity of Hamas” and ignores the lack of leadership and institutions in Palestine.
However, President Abbas welcomed the announcement, calling it a “historic” move. France said it would work with Canada to push for peace in the Middle East.
The UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer also said Britain would recognize Palestine in September — unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza and takes steps toward peace.
A Step Toward Peace
Carney said Canada has always supported the idea of two countries — Israel and Palestine — living side by side in peace. But he said this goal is now in danger because of Israel’s expanding settlements in the West Bank and its failure to stop the crisis in Gaza.
He warned that Israel’s parliament is even considering taking over the West Bank completely.
Carney said recognizing a Palestinian state is also important for Israel’s future. “Lasting peace for Israel requires a stable Palestinian state that respects Israel’s right to live in peace and security,” he said.
