Carney Unveils Build Canada Homes to Tackle Housing Crisis

Carney Launches Affordable Housing Drive in Canada

NEPEAN, Ontario – Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the launch of Build Canada Homes, a new federal agency tasked with tackling the country’s housing crisis by constructing affordable homes for low-income families and partnering with private developers to deliver housing for the middle class.

Carney, who leads the ruling Liberal Party, said the initiative is part of his government’s broader pledge to improve affordability, curb homelessness, and boost housing supply. The move comes after soaring housing costs eroded public support for his predecessor, former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

“We’re in a housing crisis,” Carney told reporters on Sunday. “And it’s going to take all hands on deck to get us out of it.”

The agency will help reduce the risks associated with building by cutting upfront costs and making public lands available for housing projects.

Carney, a former central banker, has also been unveiling new initiatives aimed at diversifying Canada’s economy, particularly as trade tensions and U.S. tariffs put pressure on Canadian businesses.

“We’re transforming Canada’s economy from one that had become too reliant on a single trading partner to an economy that’s more diverse,” he said.
