Arizona Crowd Honors Slain Activist Charlie Kirk; Widow Forgives Alleged Shooter

ARIZONA – Thousands gathered in a packed stadium in Arizona on Sunday to honor Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist who was shot and killed earlier this month at a Utah university. Among the crowd of more than 60,000 were US President Donald Trump and other high-profile figures.

Kirk’s widow, Erika, delivered an emotional speech, saying, “My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men just like the one who took his life. That man, that young man—I forgive him.” Her voice faltered as she continued, “I forgive him because it was what Christ did. And it’s what Charlie would do. The answer to hate is not hate.”

Charlie Kirk had built a national profile advocating conservative, Christian-centered political values, using his social media presence, podcast, and university appearances to rally young voters and support Donald Trump. Authorities say 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, the suspected shooter, justified the attack by accusing Kirk of spreading “hatred.” Robinson now faces seven charges, including aggravated murder, and prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.

Trump praised Kirk during the memorial as “a giant of his generation” and “above all a devoted husband, father, son, Christian and patriot,” calling him “violently killed because he spoke for freedom and justice. For God and country. For reason and for common sense.” The president’s address was part of a service that drew extraordinary attention and security, with some media comparing it to a state funeral.

Other speakers included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and right-wing media personalities such as Tucker Carlson. Top Trump advisor Stephen Miller told the audience, “You thought you could kill Charlie Kirk? You have made him immortal,” pledging to “save this civilization, to save the West.”

Turning Point USA, the influential youth political organization founded by Kirk and now led by his widow Erika, hosted the event. Erika Kirk’s public forgiveness of Robinson drew a standing ovation from the crowd.

Among the attendees, Trump was seen sitting beside billionaire Elon Musk, who appeared in good spirits despite a tense departure from his short-lived White House role overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency.

State authorities continue to pursue the death penalty against Robinson as the investigation and legal proceedings move forward.
