Charlie Kirk Fatally Shot at Utah University, Sparks National Shock

UTAH VALLEY, Utah – Charlie Kirk, 31, a leading voice in conservative politics and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot Wednesday while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. The incident has sent shockwaves through American politics and across the nation.

Video from the event shows Kirk addressing a large crowd when a single gunshot rang out. Witnesses reported that he collapsed in his chair as panic erupted among attendees. Investigators believe the fatal bullet came from a campus rooftop and that the attack appeared to be a targeted killing.

FBI Director Kash Patel initially tweeted that a suspect had been detained but later clarified that the individual had been released following questioning. “Our investigation continues,” he wrote on X.

In response to Kirk’s death, former President Donald Trump, who called Kirk a “martyr for truth,” ordered flags at government buildings, including the White House, to be flown at half-staff until Sunday. “No one understood the Heart of the Youth in America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me,” Trump said in a statement.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the shooting as a “political assassination” and appealed for Americans to step back from violence. “We just need every single person in this country to think about where we are and where we want to be,” Cox said.

Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, present at the rally, told Fox News that the shooting occurred during a question-and-answer session. “First question was about religion… Second question was about transgender shooters, mass shooters, and in the midst of that, the shot rang out,” Chaffetz said. “As soon as that shot went out, he fell back. Everybody hit the deck… a lot of people started screaming, and then everybody started running.”

Kirk had an outsized influence in American politics, particularly among young voters, helping fuel Trump’s return to power last year. Since founding Turning Point USA in 2012, he has used social media and college events to promote conservative policies on immigration, Christianity, and gun ownership, becoming a familiar figure on television and online platforms.

Reactions to Kirk’s death came from across the political spectrum. Vice President JD Vance prayed for him on social media, while right-wing commentator Tomi Lahren called him a “visionary.” On the left, former President Joe Biden condemned the attack, writing, “There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must end now.” California Governor Gavin Newsom described it as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible,” and former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt herself, said she was “horrified.”

Kirk’s death follows other high-profile political attacks, including the fatal shooting of a Democratic lawmaker and her husband in Minnesota three months ago, highlighting ongoing concerns about political violence in the United States.
