Charlie Kirk Killed in Utah Campus Shooting, Trump Calls It ‘Heinous Assassination’

OREM, Utah — Conservative activist and Trump ally Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday while speaking to thousands of students at Utah Valley University, in what former President Donald Trump condemned as a “heinous assassination.”

Kirk, 31, was answering a question about mass shootings during his campus debate event, “Prove Me Wrong,” when a sniper’s bullet struck his neck. Panic broke out among the 3,000 attendees as security footage later showed the gunman climbing onto a rooftop, firing a single shot, and fleeing the scene.

Authorities said the shooter left behind DNA evidence, including a palm print, and abandoned a high-powered bolt-action rifle in a wooded area nearby. Investigators released grainy surveillance images of a man wearing a black top with an eagle and U.S. flag design, a baseball cap, sunglasses, and Converse shoes. A $100,000 FBI reward has been announced for information leading to his arrest.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox appealed for public assistance, revealing that more than 7,000 tips had already been submitted. “We cannot do our job without the public’s help right now,” Cox said.

Though officials have not identified a suspect or motive, speculation is running high online. Trump suggested he had “an indication” of the killer’s intent, but did not elaborate, saying law enforcement was making “big progress.”

Kirk’s death has drawn condemnation from across the political spectrum and from foreign governments. FBI Director Kash Patel joined Utah officials at a press briefing, while Vice President JD Vance traveled to accompany Kirk’s family as they returned home to Arizona aboard Air Force Two.

Trump announced that Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a leading conservative voice for young voters, will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “He didn’t just help us win in 2024; he helped us staff the entire government,” Vance said in a tribute.

Kirk leaves behind his wife, Erika Frantzve, and two young children. Trump said he spoke with Frantzve after the attack: “She’s devastated, absolutely devastated, as you can imagine.”

The killing comes amid what analysts describe as the most violent stretch of American political life since the 1970s, with more than 300 politically motivated attacks documented since the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Trump himself has survived two assassination attempts in the past year.

For supporters, Kirk’s sudden death is both a personal tragedy and a stark reminder of deepening political divisions in the United States.
