Chelsea Beat Palmeiras as Estevao Scores Before Joining the Blues
Teenage Brazilian footballer Estevao, who will join Chelsea after the tournament, showed his talent by scoring a beautiful goal in the 53rd minute. This goal made the score 1-1 after Cole Palmer had earlier scored for Chelsea in Philadelphia.
But in the 83rd minute, Chelsea won the match 2-1 when a cross from Malo Gusto hit Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton and went into the goal. Chelsea will now play Fluminense, another Brazilian team, in the semi-final.
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said, “We controlled the first half and could’ve scored more. They played better in the second half, but we were in control again in the last 25 minutes. We deserved to win.”
This score (2-1) was the same as when Chelsea beat Palmeiras in the 2022 Club World Cup final.
Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira admitted, “Chelsea was the better team. They have better players and a better coach. Their second goal was lucky, but that happens in football.”
The game was played in front of a large crowd of 65,782 fans at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, even though it was the July 4 holiday.
During the match, fireworks from Independence Day lit up the sky, and the match itself was exciting like fireworks too.
Chelsea’s First Goal:
In the 16th minute, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer scored a great goal. He received a pass from Trevoh Chalobah, moved into the box, and shot low past the goalkeeper.
Chelsea had earlier lost to another Brazilian team, Flamengo, at the same stadium. For this game, Chelsea gave a first start to young Brazilian Andrey Santos in midfield. Another player, Pedro Neto, played on the wing even though he was grieving the tragic death of his Portugal teammate Diogo Jota.
Estevao’s Goal:
Playing for Palmeiras, Estevao, who will soon move to Chelsea, scored a great goal in the 53rd minute. He got the ball from Richard Rios, took two touches, and shot it past Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez with the ball hitting the crossbar before going in.
Chelsea’s Winning Goal:
With just seven minutes left, Chelsea scored again. After a short corner, Enzo Fernandez passed to Malo Gusto, who sent the ball into the box. It touched Palmeiras defender Agustin Giay’s foot and then hit goalkeeper Weverton, going into the net.
Chelsea’s new signing João Pedro also made his debut in this game.
Now, Chelsea will play Fluminense in the semi-final on Tuesday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
