China, India Seek Reset in Ties Amid Border Tensions and Strategic Rivalry
China and India have taken steps toward mending strained relations as their foreign ministers met in Beijing on Monday, marking a renewed push for peace and cooperation between the two Asian giants.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of “good-neighborliness and friendship” and called for “mutual respect and trust, peaceful coexistence, common development and win-win cooperation,” according to a statement from China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency.
The meeting comes amid efforts to ease tensions that have simmered since a deadly 2020 clash along their disputed 3,500-kilometre (2,200-mile) Himalayan border. That confrontation sparked a prolonged military standoff, though both sides agreed last October to resume coordinated patrols in contested zones.
The diplomatic thaw gathered momentum when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met later in October 2024 for the first time in five years, committing to dialogue and confidence-building.
However, despite recent diplomatic overtures, deep-rooted strategic competition persists. India remains wary of China’s growing footprint in the Indian Ocean, a region New Delhi considers within its strategic domain.
Another flashpoint in their relationship is the Dalai Lama. The 90-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader, who has lived in exile in India since fleeing Chinese repression in 1959, has long been a source of friction. China insists it holds the authority to name his successor, while the Dalai Lama maintains that only his India-based institution can make that decision.
As the world’s two most populous countries continue to jostle for influence in South Asia, their ability to stabilize bilateral relations will be closely watched by regional and global powers.
