Chisholm Jr. Hits 100th Career Home Run Amid Emotional Night at Yankee Stadium
NEW YORK — Sunday night at Yankee Stadium was a night of milestones and emotions for Jazz Chisholm Jr. The 27-year-old second baseman reached a major career landmark, hitting his 100th home run in just his sixth season in the majors.
But the achievement came on a bittersweet note. Chisholm was grieving the loss of his best friend, who passed away the night before. Cameras caught him holding back tears in the dugout and later hugging teammate Aaron Judge, burying his head in the slugger’s chest after rounding the bases.
“It felt kind of surreal,” Chisholm said after the game. “I lost my best friend yesterday, so today felt like a different type of day, especially with the 100th home run coming today and everything.”
Chisholm didn’t stop there. He added a second homer in the eighth inning, matching his career-high of 24 home runs set last season. Teammate Trent Grisham also had a standout performance, hitting two homers to set a personal best of 25 for the season.
The Yankees’ 10-3 victory over their rivals helped them avoid a four-game series sweep and snapped an eight-game losing streak against the same opponent.
Chisholm and Grisham are among five Yankees with at least 20 home runs this season, leading all of Major League Baseball in that category.
The team now turns its focus to a three-game series against the Washington Nationals, starting Monday. With the season winding down, the Yankees sit just half a game behind the Red Sox for the first wild-card spot and six games behind the division-leading Toronto Blue Jays. Their final regular-season showdown against Boston, a three-game series beginning September 12, could have major playoff implications.
This season, the Yankees have struggled against the Red Sox, holding a 2-8 record in head-to-head matchups.
