20 people die in a boat accident in eastern Afghanistan, according to an official

In the eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, a boat capsized on Saturday during a river crossing, killing twenty people—including children—a provincial official reported.

Head of the province’s information department Quraishi Badloon posted on social media platform X that a boat carrying women and children sank on Saturday morning at 7 am (0230 GMT) in the river in the Basawul area of Momand Dara district in eastern Nangarhar.

He said that the accident was being looked into and that five people had survived.

In a message shared with the media, the Nangarhar Information and Culture Department stated that the authorities had dispatched ambulances and a medical team to the area.

According to provincial government representatives, at least five bodies had been found and search operations were in progress for the remaining ones.

Since there isn’t a bridge close by, locals frequently use boats—often in poor condition—to cross the river, according to local media.
