According to a spokeswoman for Ukraine’s border service who spoke to Ukrinform news agency, some thirty Ukrainian men have lost their lives while attempting to enter the country illegally in order to escape fighting in the conflict that began in 2022.
Andriy Demchenko stated, “Some lost their lives while attempting to cross a mountain river or traverse mountains,” in response to a late-morning Ukrinform story.
“Overall, since the full-scale invasion began, about 30 people have died attempting to illegally cross the border.”
Martial law in Ukraine prohibits males between the ages of 18 and 60 from leaving the nation, with some limitations, in case they are called up to battle.
In a statement posted on social media on Monday, the State Border Guard Service reported that 24 men in particular had perished while attempting to cross the Tisa River, which separates Ukraine from Romania.
According to Demchenko, border guards have discovered over 450 criminal organizations that have tried to transport individuals over the border since the beginning of the conflict.
Demchenko stated, “Attempts to cross the border illegally occur every day.” “The majority of these efforts occur outside the Moldovan and Romanian border crossings. On the border with Poland, the highest number of falsified documents have been reported.”
Demchenko stated to Ukraine’s national radio earlier in April that around ten males are caught daily on average while attempting to exit the country illegally.
The Ukrainian government criticized foreign Ukrainians who it said expected to get assistance from the state without aiding it in its fight for survival in the war against Russia, and last week banned consular services for male nationals of military age until May 18.
Regarding the unlawful border crossings from Romania, Moldova, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia, the BBC reported in November that since the start of the war, about 20,000 men had left Ukraine in order to avoid being conscripted.
