Earthquake 4.8 Strikes Southern Punjab

4.8-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Southern Punjab, Tremors Felt Across Multiple Cities

MULTAN – A moderate earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck 126 kilometers west of Multan at a depth of 55 kilometers, officials from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported.

“The provincial administration is currently assessing any damage to building structures,” the PDMA spokesperson said. “Our control room and district emergency operation centres remain on high alert.”

This follows earlier seismic activity in September that affected Islamabad, parts of Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the tremors originated from the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan, at a depth of 111 kilometers.

Residents in cities including Peshawar, Abbottabad, Malakand, Mardan, Hangu, Nowshera, Battagram, Swat, Bajaur, Mohmand, Buner, Attock, Mianwali, and Gujranwala reported feeling the tremors.

Experts have warned of ongoing tectonic activity in the region due to Pakistan’s position near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian plates.

Earlier this month, a major earthquake in eastern Afghanistan claimed hundreds of lives. In response, Pakistan sent essential food, medicines, and daily-use supplies to support affected Afghan communities.
