ECNEC Clears Major Road Projects for Sindh, Including Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway

ISLAMABAD – The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a series of major infrastructure projects in Sindh, including the long-awaited Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway.

The project will be completed in five sections, with the first three—covering 180 kilometres—financed through a loan from the Islamic Development Bank. The remaining two sections will be funded either through federal resources or via a public-private partnership.

Chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, the ECNEC meeting saw Sindh represented by Provincial Minister Jam Khan Shoro. The motorway alone carries an estimated cost of Rs363 billion.

In addition, ECNEC approved multiple road projects to boost regional connectivity. A new 221-kilometre road from Chundko in Sanghar to Rohri will cut across desert terrain, pass through Khairpur, and link directly to Rohri. This will be jointly funded by the federal and Sindh governments.

The Mehran Highway will also be dualized, while the road from Rohri to Guddu Barrage is set for complete reconstruction—both projects to be jointly financed.

In coastal Sindh, a 36-kilometre coastal highway in Thatta has been cleared for development, along with new roads connecting Tando Adam and Tando Allahyar. The meeting also decided to speed up repairs on the existing National Highway between Hyderabad and Sukkur.

Minister Jam Khan Shoro played a pivotal role in securing approvals for these development initiatives, which aim to improve connectivity and spur economic growth in the province.
