Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight revealed that Cillian Murphy, who won the coveted Best Actor Oscar earlier this month, will play Tommy Shelby again in the film adaptation of the critically acclaimed British crime drama, according to Entertainment Weekly.
At the launch of his new BBC series The Town, Knight told Birmingham World, “He definitely is coming back for it.” “September is when we’re filming it.”
The six-season historical drama, which aired from 2013 to 2022, was largely inspired on the post-World War I activities of the Birmingham gang Peaky Blinders. The show, which centers on Murphy Tommy Shelby and his team, made its BBC Two premiere in 2013 before moving to BBC One for its fifth season in 2018. However, as soon as the show debuted on Netflix, viewership soared. Murphy had previously declared in 2022 that he was open to revisiting Tommy Shelby in a motion picture, according to Entertainment Weekly. Murphy stated at the time, “I do hope we’ll make a film and Steve is very keen to make a film.” “There is more life in the old dog yet, I think.”
Knight has made it known that he intends to make a movie after the conclusion of the much watched series. Knight has earlier stated to Entertainment Weekly in 2021, “I’m calling this the end of the beginning,” “We plan to conclude the current series, but first we will film a movie, which we hope to have finished in around 18 months, maybe even sooner. After that, we’ll start a few spinoffs that will be a part of the same world, depending on how the movie’s plot fits together.”
Murphy is undoubtedly returning to Tommy Shelby three-piece suit, peacoat, and newsboy cap, so when the movie finally comes together, Peaky Blinders fans will be in for a delicious surprise.
