During a media talk in Islamabad on 4 February 2021, Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM)on health Dr. Faisal Sultan talked about the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine which started being administered in Pakistan during this week. While talking to the media, Dr. Faisal sultan asserted that the Sinopharm vaccine is suitable for people aged from 18-60. According to Dr. Faisal Sultan, the government committee has decided to issue the license of vaccine for people of the age group of 18 to 60 years after analyzing and reviewing the preliminary data about the Sinopharm vaccine

Dr. Faisal Sultan said that at this stage, the Government committee did not authorize the use of the Sinopharm vaccine for people elder than 60. He further added that the reasons for not approving this vaccine for elderly people are not “unusual”: this normally happens when new medicines come in the market. According to the Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SPAM) on Health, the Sinopharm vaccine may be used for the elderly in the future when more data about this vaccine become available to us.

Vaccination Compaign in Pakistan
Pakistan has started vaccinating its frontline health workers on 3rd February 2021 as the first phase of its vaccination campaign. In the second phase, the Vaccine will be administered to people older than 60. In the third phase, the vaccine will be provided to people above 18. People of less than 18 years age group are not authorized to be vaccinated at any cost.
The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) had approved Chinese state-owned firm Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use last month. So far, three vaccines have been approved for use in the country — Sinopharm’s vaccine, Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine, and the vaccine developed by Oxford University-AstraZeneca.
