France Backs Palestinian Statehood Ahead of Peace Conference

France to Recognize Palestine in September, Boosting Peace Conference

PARIS – Just days before a major peace conference on the Israel-Palestine issue, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine in September.

Experts say this move could make the upcoming July 28–30 conference, co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia, more important and helpful for peace. Many believe Macron’s decision will push other countries to also support Palestinian statehood.

What Is the Peace Conference About?

The conference will focus on:

Supporting the creation of a Palestinian state.

Reforming the Palestinian Authority.

Disarming Hamas and removing it from politics.

Helping Arab countries normalize ties with Israel.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and many world leaders are expected to attend the meeting in New York. However, Israel and the United States will not take part.

Why Now?
The war in Gaza has lasted more than 21 months. It began after Hamas attacked Israel, and Israel responded with a large military operation. Thousands of Palestinians have died, and living conditions in Gaza have become extremely poor.

The international community is under pressure to find a peaceful solution. Over 140 countries already recognize Palestine, and many support the idea of two states living side-by-side peacefully—Israel and Palestine.

What Are the Challenges?
Israeli leaders have talked about annexing Palestinian land.

Settlements in the West Bank keep expanding.

Gaza remains in crisis, and the future Palestinian state may not have enough land.

France hopes this conference will lead to real steps toward peace, even though no new peace deals are expected to be announced.

UK’s Position
The UK said it will not recognize Palestine on its own and wants to see a broader peace plan first.

A Call for Courage
Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said the world must be brave and act now. “There is no other choice. This conference is a chance to turn international promises into real action,” he said.
