France to Recognize State of Palestine at UN in September

PARIS – French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine in September at the United Nations General Assembly.

Posting on social media, Macron said, “True to its historic commitment to peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognise the State of Palestine.”

With France’s decision, a total of 142 countries will now recognize Palestine as a state, according to AFP. However, both Israel and the United States oppose this move.

France is set to become the most powerful European country to recognize Palestinian statehood.

Macron added that the top priority now is to stop the war in Gaza and help the civilian population. He said it is also important to build a viable Palestinian state, one that is peaceful, agrees to be demilitarized, and recognizes Israel—so that everyone in the Middle East can live in safety.

Palestinian Authority leader Mahmud Abbas’s deputy, Hussein al-Sheikh, welcomed the news. He thanked President Macron and said that the decision shows France’s support for international law and the rights of the Palestinian people.
