Gamescom 2025 Kicks Off With Big Titles, Industry Faces Mixed Fortunes

COLOGNE – The world’s biggest video game fair, Gamescom 2025, opens Tuesday night with a showcase of major upcoming releases, led by Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Wednesday is reserved for trade visitors to strike deals and explore new trends, before doors open to the public from Thursday through Sunday, when tens of thousands of gamers are expected to flood the Cologne exhibition halls.

Last year, nearly 335,000 people attended the event. This year brings notable changes: Nintendo returns after a one-year absence, boosted by record sales of its Switch 2 console. Microsoft’s Xbox division is also set to unveil new portable hardware later this year. Sony, however, has opted out.

Around 1,500 exhibitors are present, reflecting an industry that’s recovering financially but still reeling from layoffs. Microsoft alone announced 9,000 job cuts in July, canceling several projects, including Perfect Dark and Everwild. In total, more than 30,000 gaming jobs have vanished since early 2023.

Analysts say the global games market will hover near $190 billion in 2025, but competition for players’ time is fiercer than ever, with platforms like Roblox and Fortnite dominating audiences.

In response, Microsoft has shifted strategy, publishing more titles across rival consoles — including PlayStation — while Sony has opened some of its exclusives, like Helldivers 2, to Xbox.

The push comes as the costs of blockbuster “AAA” games soar into the hundreds of millions, leaving studios exposed if sales disappoint. Still, smaller titles are proving they can shine. French indie hit Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sold over four million copies with a modest budget, showing that creativity and gameplay can rival big-budget spectacles.

Yet for every success, many smaller games fail to break through. Industry experts say the competition has never been tougher.

Looking ahead, attention is already turning to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI, expected to deliver the biggest launch in entertainment history — a release that could revive momentum across the gaming world.
