Giants Rookie Daniel Dart Shines in Preseason Finale, Avoids Major Injury in 42-10 Win Over Patriots
The New York Giants put on a show at the Meadowlands, cruising to a 42-10 victory over the New England Patriots in their final preseason game.
Rookie quarterback Daniel Dart turned heads early in the first quarter when he escaped the pocket and sprinted downfield. Patriots defensive back Craig Woodson closed in, but Dart cut inside, only to be brought down by linebacker Jack Gibbens. Dart hit the ground hard and was briefly evaluated for a potential concussion.
Amazon Prime’s broadcast confirmed that Dart cleared concussion protocol, though he did not return to the game. Later, cameras caught Giants head coach Brian Daboll speaking with Dart on the sideline, jokingly reminding him to slide.
“There are certain times when you’ve got to make the right decision,” Daboll said after the game. “This particular game was probably a good time to slide—our third preseason game.”
Dart reflected on the play, saying, “Yeah, first of all, I shouldn’t have fumbled. But honestly, I felt like I could make something happen in the open field. You slide if you’re going to take a big hit. I didn’t feel like that was the case here, so I tried to extend the play.”
On the stat sheet, Dart completed 6 of 12 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown to Greg Dulcich just two minutes into the game. The win capped a perfect 3-0 preseason for the Giants.
Selected 25th overall out of Ole Miss, Dart finished the preseason completing 32 of 47 passes (68.1 percent) for 372 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Despite his strong showing, Daboll confirmed that veteran Russell Wilson will start the regular season under center.
The Giants open their regular season at Washington on September 7.
