Flash Floods and Landslides Claim 18 Lives in Gilgit-Baltistan

GILGIT — At least 18 people have lost their lives in separate incidents of flash floods and landslides across Gilgit-Baltistan, officials confirmed on Thursday.

In Ghizer district, eight people, including a boy, a girl, and a woman, were killed, while two siblings died in Diamer. Four others — among them children — sustained injuries in the two districts. Authorities reported that flash floods struck 37 locations in Ghizer alone.

Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said road access had been restored at Babusar Loshi and Gandlo along the Karakoram Highway. He urged residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant as the risk of further flooding remains high.

Just days earlier, on August 11, a massive landslide killed eight local volunteers in Danyor, Gilgit, as they worked to repair a flood-damaged water channel. Several others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals, where emergency services are on high alert.

Rescue teams, with the help of residents, continue to search for people feared trapped under the debris. Witnesses said the landslide struck without warning, burying multiple volunteers under tonnes of earth and rock. Police confirmed that four survivors were pulled out alive but remain in critical condition.
