Goffin Stuns Shelton in Straight Sets at Shanghai Masters
Shanghai — In a surprising turn at the Shanghai Masters, Belgium’s David Goffin, 34, defeated American rising star Shelton, 22, ranked sixth in the world, with a convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Goffin started the match strongly, breaking Shelton’s serve in the third and seventh games to secure the first set in just over 30 minutes. The second set proved more competitive, but shortly after play resumed following a rain delay, Goffin capitalized on an unforced error to break in the ninth game and close out the match.
Shelton, still recovering from a shoulder injury sustained at the US Open, struggled to find his rhythm against the experienced Belgian.
Goffin, however, has a history of upsetting top-ranked players. Earlier this year, he stunned world number one Carlos Alcaraz in Miami, and last year in Shanghai, he eliminated world number three Alexander Zverev.
With this win, Goffin continues to prove he remains a formidable force against the sport’s elite.
