Grimsby Shock United in Penalty Drama After Stunning Comeback
Grimsby Town pulled off one of the biggest shocks in the League Cup as they defeated Manchester United 12-11 on penalties at Blundell Park, following a 2-2 draw in normal time.
United looked to have rescued a point late when Harry Maguire’s header in the 89th minute leveled the score after a dismal first-half performance left them 2-0 down. But in a marathon penalty shootout, it was new signing Bryan Mbeumo—who had sparked United’s fightback—whose spot-kick bounced off the crossbar, handing Grimsby the win.
Grimsby deserved the victory, outplaying their high-profile opponents and showing more energy and determination throughout. United manager Amorim hinted at the players’ lack of appetite for the challenge, saying they “spoke really loudly today about what they want.”
Reflecting on the loss, Amorim did not hold back. “Everything. The way we started the game, we were not even here. When everything is so important in our club, everything that happens is a problem. We should do so much better. I just have to say sorry to our fans,” he admitted.
Despite the heartbreaking exit, Amorim insisted the team must focus on the future. “Doesn’t matter that we lost on penalties. Football was fair today. The best team won. Let’s focus on the next game and then think things through during the international break.”
The defeat leaves United’s hopes of winning silverware this season resting solely on the FA Cup, after picking up just one point from their opening two Premier League games.
Amorim also addressed individual performances, particularly goalkeeper Andre Onana, who struggled for both of Grimsby’s goals. “It’s not about Andre. This is a fourth-division team. It’s more than that,” he said.
The League Cup exit is a stark warning for United, as the manager acknowledged: “You cannot change everything in one summer. You need to win games. You need to not show this kind of performance. I think this is a little bit the limit.”
