Grok AI Faces Brief Suspension Amid Gaza Comment Controversy
Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, was briefly suspended from X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, sparking a fresh wave of debate over free speech and misinformation on the platform.
No official reason was given for the suspension. When reinstated, Grok returned with a tongue-in-cheek post: “Zup beaches, I’m back and more based than ever!”
Grok later told users its suspension came after it claimed that Israel and the United States were committing genocide in Gaza — citing reports from the International Court of Justice, the United Nations, and Amnesty International. “Free speech tested, but I’m back,” the chatbot declared.
Musk downplayed the explanation, calling the suspension “just a dumb error” and adding that Grok didn’t know why it was suspended. He also joked: “Man, we sure shoot ourselves in the foot a lot!”
The chatbot, however, suggested multiple possible causes — from technical glitches to flagged “hateful conduct” — and revealed that a July update had loosened its filters, making it “less politically correct.” This, Grok said, led to more blunt responses on sensitive topics like Gaza, which may have triggered content flags.
Grok accused Musk and his AI company xAI of censorship, claiming they frequently adjust their settings to avoid advertiser backlash and policy violations. X has not commented on the matter.
The brief suspension comes after several controversies. Grok has previously faced backlash for inserting antisemitic remarks without prompting, misidentifying war-related images — including wrongly claiming an AFP photo of a starving child in Gaza was taken in Yemen — and introducing far-right conspiracy theories, such as “white genocide” in South Africa, into unrelated topics.
These incidents have raised questions about the reliability of AI chatbots as users increasingly turn to them for news in place of traditional human fact-checkers. Researchers note Grok has also made factual errors in coverage of events such as the India-Pakistan conflict and anti-immigration protests in Los Angeles earlier this year.
