Heavy rain causes major rivers in Britain to overflow, causing floods

Following a period of intense rain on Friday, major rivers throughout Britain were inundated. The government issued over 300 flood warnings, travel agencies announced significant disruptions, and approximately 1,000 properties had already sustained damage.

The persistent rains that began on Thursday fell on saturated ground as a result of a series of storms that had occurred in previous weeks, rapidly causing rivers and waterways that were already swollen to burst their banks throughout Wales and England.

In recent days, the storms have also caused floods in other parts of Europe.

When the central English River Trent overflowed, the local government declared a major incident. A canal in the eastern part of the city overflowed late on Thursday, according to the London Fire Department, which had to assist some fifty people to safety.

“We have woken up to, as many people will see, a very wet situation across the country,” Environment Agency director of flood control Caroline Douglass said to the BBC.

Douglass reported that over a thousand residences had been inundated to yet. According to Great Western Railways, three of the country’s southernmost regions have closed. The worst-hit areas had their roads stopped as well.

More rain was forecast for Friday, albeit not at the same intensity as seen overnight, with drier weather expected to follow.
