"Dune: Part Two" has a strong opening, spicing up the box office

Warner Bros.’ new sci-fi film Dune: Part Two, which brought some spice to an otherwise lackluster movie year, topped the North American box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $81.5 million, according to industry observer Exhibitor Relations on Sunday.

With a large international cast that includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Lea Seydoux, and Javier Bardem, analyst David A. Gross declared, “This is an outstanding opening” for a sci-fi sequel.

The most anticipated film of the year, Denis Villeneuve’s epic follow-up to Dune, which is based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel about conflict and survival on the incredibly hostile desert planet Arrakis, opened at a rate almost double that of the first movie. Overseas sales of Dune: Part Two have reached $97 million.

The biography only brought in $7.4 million for second place, leaving Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love, the weekend’s top earner at the box office, in the dust. Starring as the legendary reggae artist is British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir.

The most recent episodes of Fathom Events and the religious drama The Chosen, which is based on the life of Jesus Christ and cost $3.9 million, came in third place. Jonathan Roumie, an Egyptian by birth, portrays Jesus in the crowdfunded series.

Ordinary Angels, a true-life drama from Lionsgate, ranked fourth with $3.8 million. Starring as a hairstylist from Kentucky, Hilary Swank mobilizes her community to support a widower with a critically ill daughter. With a total of $3.2 million, Dakota Johnson’s Spider-Man spinoff Madame Web from Sony ranked sixth over the weekend.

The following five films completed the top 10: Wonka ($1.7 million), Argylle ($1.4 million), Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba ($2.1 million), Migration ($2.5 million), and The Beekeeper ($1.1 million).
