Hub Dam Almost Full Karachi Residents Warned as Flood Risk Rises

Hub Dam Nears Full Capacity, Authorities Issue Emergency Alerts

Karachi, Pakistan – Karachi’s main water source, the Hub Dam, is nearly at full capacity, prompting warnings from irrigation and disaster management authorities.

According to the Irrigation Department, the dam’s water level has risen to 338 feet, up from 335 feet the previous day. With the maximum capacity of the dam being 339 feet, only one foot of storage remains before it begins to overflow.

Authorities have said that the dam’s spillway may be activated at any moment to release excess water, a routine safety measure overseen by the Ministry of Water Resources, WAPDA, and the Lasbela administration.

Residents living near the Hub River have been advised to evacuate immediately to avoid potential danger. Nearby business owners, particularly those operating crush plants, have been urged to relocate their equipment and workers from the riverbanks. Officials warned that delaying evacuation could be hazardous due to the risk of sudden flooding.

The Hub Dam, located about 56 kilometres from Karachi, supplies roughly 100 million gallons of water daily to the city and surrounding areas in Balochistan. Recent heavy rainfall in the region’s mountains and hills has rapidly filled the reservoir, bringing it close to capacity.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assured the public that water will be released in a controlled manner to maintain the dam’s safety and minimize flood risks.
