Govt Plans PM’s Relief Package for Flood Victims, Awaits IMF Nod

Islamabad — The federal government is preparing to roll out the Prime Minister’s Relief Package for flood-hit communities, with funding to be drawn from emergency allocations in the national budget.

According to official sources, Islamabad will formally seek the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) approval before launching the scheme. The IMF has asked Pakistan to provide comprehensive assessments of the damage and urgent needs resulting from the recent floods.

So far, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reported estimated damages of Rs40–50 billion, while Sindh has put forward figures close to Rs40 billion. Punjab is expected to submit its initial damage estimates in the coming days. Provincial governments have also agreed to raise additional revenue to help finance rehabilitation efforts.

Discussions between Pakistan and the IMF entered their fifth day on Monday, with dedicated sessions focusing on flood losses and National Finance Commission (NFC) matters. Officials from the federal finance ministry, along with representatives from Sindh, KP, and Balochistan, participated in the talks. It was conveyed to the IMF that Balochistan faced minimal flood-related damage.

On Tuesday, the sixth day of negotiations, IMF delegates are scheduled to receive a detailed briefing from Punjab government officials, sources confirmed.
