Imran Khan Granted Bail in 8 May 9 Cases by Supreme Court

Supreme Court Grants Bail to Imran Khan in Eight May 9 Cases

Islamabad — The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday granted bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in eight cases related to the May 9 incident. A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and including Justices Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Shafi Siddiqui, heard the case.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Afridi questioned the prosecution about the evidence against Khan, asking, “Apart from oral and electronic evidence, what else do you have against the accused?”

Justice Shafi Siddiqui sought clarity on the registration of the First Information Report (FIR), to which Special Prosecutor Zulfiqar Naqvi confirmed it was filed on May 9. Naqvi added that the police had requested permission from a magistrate to conduct three tests, including a polygraph, and that the Supreme Court had also allowed them to approach the trial court for the purpose. However, the accused did not undergo the tests despite the approvals.

“If that is the case, legal consequences will follow,” Chief Justice Afridi remarked. “But why are you insisting so much? The trial court will evaluate the evidence.”

Justice Rizvi asked whether such tests were commonly conducted in other criminal cases, while Prosecutor Naqvi insisted there was strong evidence against Khan. The Chief Justice emphasized that any evidence must ultimately be proven in a trial court.

The bench also noted that Khan had been out on bail for two months after the incident, questioning whether that time was sufficient for the police to complete their investigation. Khan’s counsel, Salman Safdar, pointed out that the Lahore High Court had previously denied bail in November last year and that little progress had been made on the case in the following six months. He also clarified that Khan was not nominated in five other May 9 cases.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the Supreme Court approved Imran Khan’s bail in eight cases and ordered his release.
