ATC Sends Imran Khan’s Nephews to Judicial Custody in May 9 Cases
LAHORE – An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Friday rejected police requests for further physical remand of Shahrez Khan, the son of Aleema Khan and nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, and instead sent him to judicial custody.
Police had sought an extension in Shahrez’s remand, claiming a baton had been recovered from him and that his photogrammetric test had been conducted. The investigating officer argued that further interrogation was necessary to complete the probe.
However, Shahrez’s legal team, including senior lawyer Salman Akram Raja, countered that the accused was not even in Lahore on May 9 when the violent incidents occurred. They presented affidavits from his friends, stating that Shahrez was in Chitral at the time, and urged the court to discharge him from the case.
After hearing both sides, the ATC turned down the prosecution’s request and ordered that Shahrez be placed in judicial custody instead.
Earlier, in a related case, another nephew of Imran Khan, Shershah Khan, was also sent to jail on judicial remand in connection with the Jinnah House attack.
Authorities allege that Shershah was involved in the May 9 violence, during which Lahore’s historic Jinnah House was ransacked. Police claim to have recovered a stick from him and conducted a photogrammetric test, while also planning to examine his social media activity.
The court, however, ruled that obtaining social media material does not require physical remand and thus rejected the prosecution’s request to keep him in police custody.
Both Shahrez and Shershah, nephews of the PTI founder, are now in judicial custody as investigations into the May 9 incidents continue.
