The nation’s top broadband service provider, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), is pleased to report that the nation’s first 50G-PON technology trial was completed successfully. This represents a significant step forward for the rollout of next-generation fiber-optic broadband services in Pakistan. The strategic alliance between PTCL and Huawei, a world leader in information and communication technology, has allowed for this ground-breaking accomplishment.
The ITU-T defines 50G-PON as a next-generation passive optical network-based broadband technology that is expected to transform Pakistan’s digital landscape. Compared to the current GPON and XG(S)-GPON technologies, 50G-PON delivers an incredible 50 Gbps per PON port. This technological advancement is expected to unlock the infinite potential for bandwidth-intensive and low-latency next-generation services, unlocking future requirements related to industries, enterprises, campuses, and home environments. Key use cases include the evolution towards Holographic Technologies, the XR-based Metaverse in homes and workplaces, Smart Manufacturing based on 3D Machine Vision, remote surgery and medical clinics, high performance gaming, etc. Additionally, it will be a valuable tool for businesses.
The ability of 50G-PON technology to cohabit peacefully over the same physical and passive optical network as GPON and XG(S)-PON is one of its notable advantages. As a result, PTCL will be able to provide its clients noticeably faster internet speeds when they seek an on-demand service update.
Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (GCTIO) of PTCL & Ufone 4G, Jafar Khalid, expressed his excitement on this historic occasion by saying, “PTCL has delivered Pakistan’s first-ever trial of 50G-PON technology, marking another milestone.” The partnership between PTCL and Huawei on 50G-PON is a significant step towards the future development of fiber broadband in Pakistan as we continue to be committed to leading the market in providing next-generation broadband services. The objective of this program is to expedite enterprise digital transformation and significantly improve consumer user experience, hence aiding in the development of a viable and thriving Digital Pakistan.
The successful trial of 50G-PON technology and its ultimate commercial reality, as PTCL continues to lead advances in the telecommunications sector, reinforces our determination to providing innovative solutions that will catapult Pakistan into an advanced digital age.
