Globalization of Indian cinema: 'Drishyam' will be remade in Hollywood

Jeetu Joseph’s highly regarded movie Drishyam is getting ready for a global release as it gets ready for an English version to be made in Hollywood. The 2013 Malayalam film, which starring Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, and Esther Anil, has already been successful enough to be remade in several other Indian languages and even in Chinese. The cult series is about to become well-known in Hollywood.

At the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, producers Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak revealed their grand plans for the English remake. JOAT Films, Gulfstream Pictures, and Panorama Studios are collaborating on the project. The news marks a noteworthy turning point since Drishyam is the first Indian movie to be adapted for the big screen in Hollywood.

The revelation was announced on X by trade expert Ramesh Bala, who said, “The cult franchise Drishyam is all set to go global after garnering massive success in the India and China markets.” He emphasized that the Hollywood project is helping the series reach a new milestone, and that the Korean version was previously announced. Sreedhar Pillai stated on X that Panorama Studios has obtained the worldwide remake rights for Aashirvad Cinemas, the original makers of Drishyam, as well as its follow-up, Drishyam 2.

Drishyam’s journey has been remarkable, beginning with its 2013 debut in Malayalam. Remakes of the film in Kannada (Drishya), Telugu (Drushyam), Tamil (Papanasam), and Hindi (Drishyam) were soon made due to the compelling plot and outstanding performances. Renowned actors such as Ravichandran, Venkatesh, Kamal Haasan, and Ajay Devgn played the main parts in these versions.

International adaptations carried on the popularity, with Sheep Without a Shepherd in Mandarin-Chinese and Dharmayuddhaya in Sinhala released in 2017 and 2019, respectively. The remakes were directed by different people in different languages; Jeetu Joseph was in charge of the Tamil version.

The Hollywood version of Drishyam represents a new high point for the Drishyam series, with remakes in Indonesia and Korea also underway. The franchise’s reputation was further cemented in 2021 with the publication of Drishyam 2, a rare and successful sequel. This legendary Indian thriller’s reputation was expanded with the Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi remakes of the sequel, which was hailed as a deserving continuation of the original.

Drishyam is set to enthrall viewers everywhere as the English adaptation takes shape, solidifying its reputation as a masterpiece of cinema that appeals to all ages. The excitement around this Hollywood project serves to further cement the movie’s lasting reputation and the world’s acknowledgement of its gripping story.
