Internet users are frustrated by “Heeramandi” because of historical errors

Former courtesans from Pakistan criticize Bhansali's lavish "Heeramandi"

The audience complained that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest show Heeramandi lacked historical and social accuracy.

It is worth mentioning that Netflix is currently streaming the highly awaited historical drama, which is focused on the pre-partition lives of courtesans in Lahore.

The presentation highlighted the courtesan’s of Heeramandi’s role in the British liberation struggle.

Now, a number of social media users have questioned the highly renowned filmmaker’s research team, pointing out a number of errors and inaccurate portrayals of Lahoris.

Pakistani physician Hamd Nawaz, who works in Lahore, posted a lengthy thread on X outlining the shortcomings of the just launched series.

“Just watched Heeramandi,” the writer wrote. Everything was there except for Heermandi. Either your narrative isn’t set in 1940s Lahore, or if it is, it isn’t set in the Urdu-speaking Delhi, the Agrarian environment, the Lakhnavi garments, or the 1840s feel. I’m sorry, but my Lahori self just can’t seem to let it go.”

“Bhansali’s search should have definitely gone beyond Bridal Couture walks,” the woman continued. The courtesan never had enough money to buy these gems, not even close. These blouses, what are they? Saris? Ghagras? Lehngas? Perhaps some Punjabi clothing? No, let’s give them a Sabyasachi.”

Heeramandi was not a “street of glamour,” but rather one of “exploitation, slavery, and filthy poverty,” according to Hamd.

The well-known 2004 book Peer-e-Kamil by Umera Ahmed was also spotted by several internet users in one of the show’s scenes.

A screenshot was submitted by another user, showing Sonakshi Sinha’s character Fareedan reading a newspaper with the date 2022 written on it.

Principal cast members of the show include Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Taha Shah Badussha.
